The University of Milan (Italian: Università degli Studi di Milano, UNIMI) is one the largest universities in Italy, with about 62,801 students, a teaching and research staff of 2,455 and a non-teaching staff of 2,200.

The university is a member of the League of European Research Universities.

Throughout Milan, the University is normally known as Statale to avoid confusion with other academic institutions in the city.clarification needed

History

The university of Milan was founded on 30th of September, 1923, when the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of the Milan Accademia, active since 1861, was joined with the Istituti Clinici di Perfezionamento, founded by Luigi Mangiagalli in 1906.

In June 1998, a "Second University of Milan" was founded at Bicocca, see University of Milan Bicocca.
