History

Perfume was formed in 2001 and originally consisted of Ayaka "A~chan" Nishiwaki, Yuka "Kashiyuka" Kashino and Yuuka Kawashima. Shortly after the band's formation, Kawashima left the group to concentrate on her studies and was replaced by Ayano "Nocchi" Ōmoto. the group's name "Perfume" came from the chinese character in the three original members' names, "香", which means fragrance. But after Yuuka left, A~chan explains the origin of the name, saying, "Because perfume can make people comfortable or pleasant and we hope to be like it. We made this explanation later though."

Bee-Hive Records

In 2002, Perfume released two limited edition singles, "Omajinai Perori" and "Kareshi Boshūchū", sold only in Hiroshima, on the label Bee-Hive Records. The band moved to Tokyo in 2003 to be produced by FUURI-CL, and by 2004 had released three more singles, "Sweet Donuts", "Monochrome Effect", and "Vitamin Drop", produced by capsule's Yasutaka Nakata. They also performed three live shows within that time, gaining fans for their energetic performances.

Tokuma Japan Communications

On September 21, 2005, their major debut "Linear Motor Girl" was released, and in 2006 Perfume released two singles, "Computer City" and "Electro World".

Polyrhythm

Perfume's first major commercial success was when they were chosen to promote their new single "Polyrhythm" in an advertisement for a recycling campaign. On the day of its release, "Polyrhythm" achieved number #4 on the Oricon charts and #7 for the weekly ranking, the first time Perfume had reached the Top 10, and sold over 60,000 copies. They then appeared on many television and radio programmes such as Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ, Music Station (which exposed them overseas through its airings on ANIMAX), and Liquidroom.

On December 31, 2007, Perfume performed in a concert titled "Countdown 2008", by far the biggest performance in the history of the group.

Baby Cruising Love/Macaroni

In February 2008, Perfume released "Baby Cruising Love/Macaroni", which achieved greater success than "Polyrhythm" by achieving #3 on the daily and weekly charts. Their debut compilation album, Perfume ~Complete Best~, re-entered the charts two years after its release due to Perfume's growing popularity, and their second album, Game achieved #1 on April 16, 2008 on the Oricon daily chart. They are the second technopop group to achieve this position, the last time achieved by Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1983.3

On April 9, 2008, a video for another new song from Game, "Secret Secret" premiered on MTV Japan. Another song in the album, "Butterfly" is used in the second promotional video of Mugen no Frontier: Super Robot Wars OG Saga.

2008

On July 9, 2008, single "love the world" was released and debuted on the Oricon sales chart at #1, becoming the first techno song ever to do so and breaking the record of #2 set in 1983 by the Yellow Magic Orchestra.45

On November 19, 2008, their ninth single, named "Dream Fighter", was released.6
