The Eastern Suburbs is a general term used to describe the metropolitan area directly to the east and south-east of the Sydney central business district in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Eastern Suburbs can refer to the suburbs within the local government areas of Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and part of the City of Sydney. The Australian Bureau of Statistics' "Eastern Suburbs Statistical Subdivision" includes only the Woolahra, Waverley and Randwick LGAs.1

The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney extends from the peninsula of South Head at Watsons Bay in the north to La Perouse in the South.

Demographics

Demographically, the northern part is home to (most of) the city's large Jewish ethne. The southern parts around Randwick, Kingsford and Maroubra have a large percentage of residents with Greek, Indonesian and Chinese backgrounds.citation needed

Housing

The region is marked by the predominance of medium and high density housing.

The northern part features affluent suburbs such as Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Darling Point Dover Heights, Double Bay, Point Piper, Woollahra, Watsons Bay, Potts Point, Rushcutters Bay, Elizabeth Bay and Bellevue Hill.

South of these suburbs is Bondi Junction, Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Queens Park, Clovelly, Coogee, Randwick and Kensington.

To the west of Bondi Junction, suburbs are described as "Inner-City" and include Centennial Park, Paddington, Darlinghurst, Moore Park and the Kings Cross locality. These suburbs were originally working class but have been gentrified since the 1980s. The landscape in these areas is dominated by overhanging trees and renovated terrace houses.

Further south, the area is also known as "South-Eastern Sydney" and is more middle and working class. It includes suburbs such as South Coogee, Maroubra, Malabar, Little Bay and La Perouse.

Landmarks

The largest commercial areas in the Eastern Suburbs are found at Bondi Junction, North Randwick, Maroubra and Double Bay.

The Eastern Suburbs includes some of Sydney's well-known beaches such as Bondi Beach, Bronte Beach and Maroubra Beach.

The University of New South Wales is one of Australia’s leading universities located in Kensington.
